RTC Trail & Greenway Funding Guide

Welcome to Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Trails and Greenways Funding Guide. This searchable database contains information about a variety of federal, state and private funding sources for trails and greenways. These funding sources – including statewide referenda that have been placed on ballots across the country since 1998 – can be used to fund various phases of acquisition, planning, design and development for trails and greenways. Through our research, we have attempted to compile the latest information regarding funding; however, due to the changing nature of trails and greenways funding sources, this database will need to be continually updated.

How is it organized?

The Trust for Public Land has a searchable database on their website of Conservation Ballot Measures on the local level that voters passed in 2001. Click here http://www.tpl.org/tier3_cdl.cfm?content_item_id=5421&folder_id=1585 for that database.

For The Brookings Institution report “Growth at the Ballot Box: Electing the Shape of Communities in November 2000,” click here: http://www.brookings.edu/es/urban/ballotbox/abstract.htm

Click here http://www.redlodgeclearinghouse.org/resources/search.asp for the Red Lodge Clearing House, a searchable database of private/foundation and federal/state funding sources for trail and greenway projects. Funding sources can be located for such interest areas as “Open Space & Recreation” and “Easements, Trusts & Land Acquisition.” These funding sources are exclusive to the western states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

We are providing this information to assist you in your funding searches. It is up to the grant applicant to determine which grant sources are appropriate for a particular project.

If you know of additional funding sources please tell us about them
